Get ready to dive into the heart of the ocean to witness the captivating phenomenon of bait balls with dolphins, mobulas, and magnificent sharks!

Far out in the Atlantic, the Azores offer the chance to meet marine life in open water: mobula rays gathering around offshore seamounts, sharks cruising through the blue, and dolphins moving through the archipelago. Join Michael AW for an expedition built around observation, photography and the thrill of never knowing what the next encounter will bring.

Our base on Santa Maria puts us within reach of the island’s signature dive sites and offshore waters. The planned programme combines five days of diving, with two dives scheduled each day, and four offshore expedition days. Conditions and wildlife will shape each day’s route, including possible visits to Ambrosio and Formigas and searches for bait-ball activity.

Visibility can be remarkable, but the Atlantic makes no guarantees. That sense of discovery is part of the experience.

We will watch for mobulas, sharks, dolphins, seabirds and the fast-moving gatherings of predators and prey that make the Azores so compelling. Michael will guide participants in observing and photographing these encounters with care.

We also intend to seek permission for dedicated whale filming. Any whale filming activity will depend on the required permit being granted and on conditions at sea.

Scuba divers, snorkellers and freedivers are welcome. Activities will be matched to each participant’s experience and to conditions on the day. Offshore sites can involve currents and exposed water, so the expedition team will determine which activities are suitable at each location.

• 18 July - Land Tour
• 19 July - Transfer to Faial Island
• 20-22 July - 3 days at Sea
• 23 July - Fly to Lisbon
