This expedition ventures into one of the least visited and most consequential reef corridors on Earth.

Sailing from Halmahera through Morotai and onward to Raja Ampat, we traverse the remote heartland of the Coral Triangle—a region where reefs still thrive in places rarely seen, yet increasingly shaped by the pressures of development, extraction, and a warming ocean. These waters are not pristine by accident; they are resilient by necessity.

Halmahera and Morotai sit at a critical threshold. Here, expansive coral meadows persist alongside early signs of stress, adaptation, and change. These reefs offer a rare opportunity to document ecosystems in transition—where survival is still possible, but no longer guaranteed. What we observe here may become an early-warning system for reefs elsewhere in the world.

This ANIMA HAI journey is both exploration and evidence-gathering. We seek seldom-visited sites, quiet reefs beyond established routes, and unrecorded indicators of resilience—while listening closely for the subtle signals of decline. Ending in Raja Ampat, the global benchmark of reef biodiversity, the expedition provides a powerful contrast between what remains possible and what may be lost.

These reefs stand at a crossroads. Balanced between endurance and erasure.

To document the reefs in this region is to understand the current trajectory of coral reefs—and the urgency of protecting what still holds.

More about the Vessel - Damai II:

The MV Damai represents the pinnacle of exclusive expedition liveaboards in the Coral Triangle—where understated luxury, precision operations, and deep respect for place come together in service of exploration.

Renowned for reaching Indonesia’s most remote reef systems, the Damai vessels have long been trusted by leading scientists, photographers, and conservation storytellers. Ocean Geographic has conducted five major expeditions aboard the exotic Damai fleet, relying on their exceptional range, stability, and discreet presence to access seldom-visited reefs far beyond conventional routes. In 2018, Damai was also selected as the official expedition vessel for Elysium: Heart of the Coral Triangle—a defining conservation journey across the region’s biodiversity core.

Purpose-designed for small-group, high-focus expeditions, Damai offers an environment where comfort never compromises intent. Spacious decks support observation, filming, and quiet analysis; refined cabins provide sanctuary after long days in the water; and a highly experienced crew ensures seamless, low-impact operations in sensitive reef environments. Every detail is tuned for depth—of access, of experience, and of understanding.

As the official ANIMA HAI platform for the Halmahera–Morotai–Raja Ampat expedition, Damai enables a rare passage through reefs at a crossroads—places still rich with coral meadows and life, yet increasingly shaped by development pressure. DAMAI II is chosen not for spectacle, but for credibility.

Widely acclaimed as among the finest and most exclusive expedition vessels in the region, Damai remains a platform of trust—quietly carrying ANIMA HAI teams into the living heartland of coral biodiversity, at the very moment it matters most.

Every ANIMA HAI expedition contributes to:

  • A Collector’s Edition Book
  • A global travelling exhibition series (2029–2031)
  • A geo-referenced digital archive, to be revisited in 2051 — when the same reefs will be re-documented to reveal humanity’s choices in the climate era

Participants are not tourists. They become Climate Avengers and contribute to a historic record — a legacy for science, policy, art and future generations.
