Where Two Worlds Collide
Join us on a once-in-a-lifetime dive expedition that retraces the evolutionary theory of one of the greatest naturalists in history—Alfred Russel Wallace. This is more than just a voyage; it’s a journey across one of Earth’s most dramatic biological boundaries—the Wallace Line—where the Asian and Australasian realms meet in a spectacular marine and ecological collision.
On this exclusive 11-night / 12-day expedition, we will cross not only the Equator but also the invisible biogeographic frontier that separates species of distinct origin—exploring marine habitats so rich, so diverse, they defy imagination.
The Wallace Line: Nature's Hidden Divide
More than a concept on a map, the Wallace Line is a natural barrier that shaped the evolutionary fate of Earth’s biodiversity. First observed by Wallace in the 19th century, this deep-sea boundary separates the fauna of Asia from that of Australia and New Guinea. While terrestrial creatures rarely crossed its abyssal depths, the marine world around it flourished into a mesmerizing hybrid of species from both sides. We’ll dive into this convergence zone where unique evolutionary lineages still echo Wallace’s original insight—encountering creatures shaped by currents, isolation, and ancient tectonics.
The Expedition Route: From Sulawesi to Borneo via the Makassar Strait
Embark in Palu, Central Sulawesi, and journey north through the nutrient-rich Makassar Strait, crossing the Equator en route to Tarakan, Borneo. Along this route, we follow the path of the powerful Indonesian Throughflow—a major ocean current that moves warm Pacific waters through Indonesia and into the Indian Ocean, influencing marine life, coral growth, and even global climate systems. We’ll explore remote and rarely visited reefs on both sides of the Wallace Line—diving coral gardens that sprawl like underwater cathedrals and walls that plunge into pelagic depths teeming with life.
