“Each time I slide into the sea; it was like immersing into a scene from 'Blue Planet'. On most occasions, I would find myself in the company of 30 to 50 half-to two-meter sized sword-wielding marlins ripping through the water at lightning speed into metallic bait balls of sardines. Their stripes ignite flashes of neon blue the moment before they charge into the shimmering bait ball.” Michael AW

Every year, from October to December one of Natures most astonishing phenomena occurs around the continental shelf off Magdalena Bay of Baja California. This action-packed swashbuckling spectacle is the annual feasting ground of the Striped Marlin (Kajikia audax), which hunts at a speed of more than 80 kilometers. In the Autumn months, beneath the clear, dark blue waters of the East Pacific Ocean, shards of silver and blue explode like fireworks on New Year's Eve. Striped Marlins, sea lions, the occasional Brydes Whale, Brown Pelicans, and other big pelagic fishes feast on the migration of sardine and mackerel bait balls.

This is a unique opportunity for anyone who wishes to experience a real-life Blue Planet moment. This rare chance of getting up-close with one of the fastest and fiercest pelagic predators, hunting naturally in their environment is guaranteed to take your breath away! So, join us this October or December in Puerto San Carlos, a village of Bahia Magdalena, or Mag Bay our home base for the most exciting adventuresome swashbuckling adventures in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

More about the Expedition

Between October to late December, striped marlins among the fastest fish on Earth migrate along the coast of the Baja peninsula, preying on mackerel and sardine bait balls. This migration is one of the most impressive things to see in the ocean. Visibility is usually around 30 meters or more and water temperatures are around 25°C. Chances of finding other marine life are very good, too! On our 2021 trips, we encountered marlins, sea lions, sailfish, dorado, whales, turtles, Mobulas rays, super pods of dolphins, and ORCAS!

These will be long days out at sea. We will leave the port early in the morning and come back in the afternoon. Note that this is a snorkel expedition (participants do not need to be scuba divers but must be comfortable swimming in the open ocean). We are likely to get in and out of the boat several times a day, with quite a bit of swimming in-between.
