Hello everyone
Help us choose the cover for OG 62 – details at the bottom of this mail
We are super excited – in less than six months, on the 13 of February 2023 we will embark on the most important expedition of the 21st century – the Antarctic Climate Epic (ACE) is an expedition like no other. This year, the world over has experienced unprecedented heat waves, wildfires, and devastating floods - more than ever before, the climate crisis, affects everything we care about: our health, our security, our economy, and our very existence.
With Dr. Sylvia Earle as chief, Ocean Geographic, Aurora Expeditions, and Mission Blue have together garnered a brain trust assembled from all over the world; talented people in science, the arts, economics, and those who care about what is possible to do right now and are willing to use their superpowers to help move from where we are, to get to a better place with respect to our influence on global climate.
The mission of ACE is to confront the consequences of the climate crisis and develop creative strategies for everyone to radically reduce carbon emissions. Expedition members will join to help formulate 23 resolutions to inspire transformative changes for global net-zero emissions by 2035. We are now calling for anyone with the ‘right stuff’ – capabilities, courage, confidence, to apply for the last 10 remaining spots for the 13 Feb 2023 expedition. ACE could be your legacy. The cover story for the next edition of Ocean Geographic is a good news story – ‘BUNAKEN – Past, Present, Future. This marine park located in North Sulawesi; Indonesia is a conservation success story. From our rapid assessment in April and July of 2022, we are happy to report that in several aspects, the CORAL REEFS OF BUNAKEN ARE EVIDENTLY BETTER THAN 30 YEARS AGO. We hope you will enjoy the pictures from Bunaken, it may be the last bastion of pristine coral reefs on our planet. You and I can help to preserve this underwater heritage for our future loved ones.
Special Alert – this is a pre-announcement for budding black water and macro photography enthusiasts; we will be collaborating with Philippine’s champion photographer Dennis Corpuz to conduct a special Blackwater and Macro Masterclass workshop at the best resort in Anilao - Aiyanar Beach Dive Resort from 22 to 28 April 2023. This last week of April is the optimum time for sighting of the amazing Blanket octopus and all the wonderful critters in the sand and in the deep water of Janao Bay. Limited spots - email to reserve your spot now.
And our expedition to experience the amazing mantas phenomenon at Baa Atoll in 2023 is filling up fast. When the stars, sun, and moon are aligned, a vortex of up to 200 mantas is found … and whale sharks hang on the surface to feast on the broth of living wriggling plankton. For this spectacular we have selected the optimum period of the season – the 2023 summer equinox. Find out more.
