Dear Fellow Associates and Members,
We have exciting news to share!
In our forthcoming edition of Ocean Geographic, we present a special focus on one of the most important yet overlooked regions on our planet. To the best of our knowledge, we may be the first ocean magazine ever to feature this remarkable region.
Often called the Third Pole, the Water Tower of Asia, and the Roof of the World, the vast Tibetan Plateau holds the largest reserves of freshwater outside the polar regions. Eight of the world’s great rivers originate here, sustaining more than two billion people across Asia before ultimately flowing into the Pacific and Indian Oceans. What happens upstream inevitably affects everything downstream.
Today, the Third Pole is beginning to fail.
Despite its profound importance as a global climate engine and the lifeline of billions, this region has received remarkably little mainstream media attention. While I have travelled to the plateau twice in recent months, it is through our collaboration with legendary explorer Wong How Mun — whom I often describe as the Indiana Jones of the Tibetan Plateau — that we are able to present this special Third Pole edition to you. Over the past five decades, How Mun has led groundbreaking expeditions across the plateau and was named one of TIME Magazine’s 25 Asian Heroes.
We are confident you will find this edition particularly compelling.
Another milestone worth celebrating: on 5 February, the photographs, artworks, and short films from our Bears, Ice, Glaciers Arctic Climate Expedition (BIG ACE) premiered at the opening of Melting Ice, Sinking Cities II: The Arctic Impact at the CDL Green Gallery, Singapore Botanic Gardens.
The exhibition runs until the end of July.
If you are in Singapore, we warmly invite you to visit. Otherwise, you can experience the exhibition virtually here: https://tinyurl.com/BIGACEEXSG
