Guadaupe is the domain of the majestic great white shark.  Two-hundred forty kilometres (150miles) from our gateway city of Ensenada, Mexico, Guadalupe’s volcanic beach is home to a fur seal colony along the edge of the island’s deep drop off, the primary attraction for the great whites. Our trip is taking place during the period following fur seal birth when the females see their pups first venture into the water to become “shark bait.” Because of this readily available food source, this is peak migration season for the great whites in this area and it’s the best time of year to see the largest females, some exceeding lengths of 6 meters (18 feet).

Being in the water with these apex predators is an eye-opening and absolutely unforgettable experience. You would be hard pressed to find a more exhilarating way to spend you time. Guadalupe’s impressive water visibility sets the perfect backdrop for these great white encounters. The first time you see the silhouette of one of these huge sharks begin to emerge out of the blue, your heart might skip a beat.

For Sharks, especially great whites, have long been vilified as mindless man-eaters that are out to hunt humans. This gross misrepresentation has played no small part in our largely apathetic view towards their worldwide slaughter to fuel the shark fin market. About 100 million sharks are killed annually, while sharks attacks account for an average of six human deaths each year. For each person killed by a shark, we murder 16.7 million of their kind.

These appalling numbers prompted world-recognized filmmaker, Leandro Blanco, to create a short piece set to original music called “Nobody Loves You” in 1998. As we celebrate the 20-year anniversary of this multi award winning song for sharks, it is now time to create a new production that reflects the way we should all feel about sharks that sends a different, more hopeful message of care and understanding.

We will be shooting the new and improved version during this Ocean Geographic Guadalupe charter and we’re calling it the “Everybody Loves You” expedition. As Dr. Sylvia Earle says, “Sharks are beautiful animals, and if you're lucky enough to see lots of them, that means that you're in a healthy ocean. You should be afraid if you are in the ocean and don't see sharks.” Join us in being an active part of the “Everybody Loves You” campaign, and help show the world the real great white shark, an animal to be revered not feared.

Ocean Geographic always makes an effort to support marine conservation projects and in the last year we have begun to actively raise funds that will be used to help realize Dr. Sylvia Earle’s dream of “democratizing the sea” by making submarines that are accessible to all. We are working to fund these citizen subs through both for-profit and non profit avenues, Blue Ring and Deep Hope, respectively. The price of your spot includes a Blue Ring membership and a donation to Deep HOPE. Blue Ring (www.bluering.blue) is a Benefit Corporation founded by Alex Rose with the goal of creating a new method of ocean conservation accessible to and inclusive of everyone who wants to better understand and protect our seas.

A $25 Blue Ring membership lets you pledge your commitment to protecting the sea by “marrying the ocean” and profits go towards building two, 1000-meter capable, citizen submarines. These submersibles will exist for the sole purpose of ocean exploration and care with no ulterior motives or financial incentives driving their use. They will be symbols of hope, dedicated to exploring and documenting places never before witnessed, as well as bringing to the public's attention news and evidence of human impacts.

The non-profit, Deep HOPE (www.deephope.org), is also funding these subs, but through donations instead of purchases. Your trip price will include a limited edition Deep HOPE pin, a Blue Ring pendant or ring (your choice), and an “Everybody Loves You” expedition exclusive Dry fit t-shirt. OG members discounts also apply. You will be part of the production and receive credit in the music video.
