 This exceptional program is specially prepared for enthusiasts who wish to capture artistic and exciting pictures of close encounter with crocodiles, sharks and our very own mermaid Odessa Burgarin from the Philippines! Conducted by Michael AW, Aaron Wong, Noel Fernandez the workshop modules offered detailed instructions & techniques by three award winning underwater photographers who specialised in big animal encounters and artistic photography with over 25 years’ experience at Gardens of the Queen.

Workshop Itinerary

Day 1 (Friday)  10am Artistic appreciation – introduction to the fine art masters at the National Museum of Fine Arts of Havana (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana)

 7pm – Buena Vista Social Club performance (optional)

Day 2 (Saturday)

4am – transfer to Gardens of the Queen via Jucaro

3pm – Mojito session at Tortuga

5pm – Masterclass Orientation and Briefing

Day 3 to 7

Three classroom and three in-water photographic sessions with sharks, crocodiles and mermaid conducted by Michael AW, Aaron Wong and Noel Fernandez

Day 8 – 9am – transfer to hotel in Havana.

About Noel Lopez Fernandez (Cuba)

Noel Lopez is perhaps the most ingenious underwater photographer in the world. Noel owns the only SEACAM Nikon F100 film camera housing that is modified to house a current model digital SLR. He did the conversion and he is now able to access all manual controls, including shooting hi res videos. His photographic skills are self-taught, having observing from the many professionals such as David Doubilet, Michael AW that he served as dive guide in his 20 tenure at Gardens of the Queen -Jardines de la Reina. He is a prolific shooter and whisperer of sharks and crocodiles.

About Aaron Wong (Singapore)


Aaron is one of the most published and recognized underwater photographer in Asia. A commercial and advertising photographer by trade, Aaron has been shooting professionally for over 19 years. His iconic images shine a new creative light into the world beneath the waves. His Marine Fine Art images have not only won awards including BBC Wildlife, Al-Thani, and Our World Underwater but also inspired countless more to look to our oceans and discover the beauty of our blue planet.

A Nikon Ambassador, member of the Ocean Artists Society and field editor of Scuba Diver Australasia, Aaron's underwater images have graced the pages of dive publications the world over.  Aron has since published two underwater books dedicated to his craft and through his images, Aaron helps spread the message of marine conservaton.  Most notably his work with sharks where he campaigns actively for the protection of these beautiful animals.  As the ambassador of Shark Savers, Aaron helpt start the 'FINished with Fins' campaign in 2012, with aims to educate the  mainstream media on the reality of shark finning. Today, the campaign is the largest of it's kind int he world with major Asian countries coming together to speak as one in stopping this cruel trade. Aaron now divides his time between his studio work and the protection and exploration of the world's oceans.

About Michael AW (Australia / Singapore)

Michael AW is an author, explorer, photographer and conservationist. His accolades include wining more than 65 international awards and being named as one of the world’s most influential nature photographers by Outdoor Photography. In 2013 he was awarded the NOGI for Arts by the American Academy of Underwater Arts and Science. His essays and pictures have been featured in BBC Wildlife, National Geographic, the Smithsonian, Nature, Ocean Geographic, Times, Nature Focus to name just a few.

In 2008 Stan Waterman conferred Michael with the Peter Benchley Shark Conservation Award by Sharks Research Institute in recognition of his highly-effective and unrelenting campaign against shark fin soup consumption in the Asia Pacific region. Michael is also a recipient of the prestigious WYLAND ICON award for Conservation in 2011 and in 2012; he was presented the Diver of the Year Award at the Beneath the Sea Festival in New Jersey. 

Michael has authored 55 books. In 2013 the “Elysium Shackleton Antarctic Visual Epic” was published, now a movie and an exhibition touring worldwide and his latest book is the “Essential Underwater Photography Masterclass. Michael is a Senior Fellow of International League of Conservation Photographers and Fellow International of the Explorer Club whose members include Sir Edmund Hilary, Roald Amundsen, Neil  Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Sylvia Earle. Michael has lead expeditions to all seven continents including the Antarctic, Arctic and five expeditions to Cuba.
