The Revillagigedos Archipelago is located in the eastern Pacific Ocean approximately 330 kms south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico - at the tip of the Baja peninsula. These islands are part of the Eastern sea mount group of island comprising of Galapagos Islands in Ecuador, and Cocos Island in Costa Rica. The Revillagigedos Islands comprise of four islands - San Benedicto Island, Socorro Island, Roca Partida and Clarion. They are remote and wild and island, often referred to as the Mexican Galapagos.
For this expedition on the Nautilus Explorer, we are catered with five skiffs; you can choose to dive with the two with divemasters on board or the other three without. Essentially, we will have five teams of five divers, giving you more time and space to interacting with the animals.
Pelagic manta Ray
The Socorro Island is renowned for predictable encounter with the up close and personal encounters with these giant Pacific manta ray, which can grow to 8m wingspan.
The Revillagigedos harbour the best diversity of pelagic sharks; schooling hammerhead schools, silver tips, silkies, duskies, Galapagos and occasionally tigers. We have encountered up to 7 species of sharks on a single dive! There are several hammerhead cleaning stations and Whale sharks.
January through March is the best time to encounter pods of wild bottlenose dolphin on a regular basis during our dive in Socorro island.
June is in bait ball season in the Socorro; past years indicate that there are more giant mantas at Socorro during bait ball season than any other time of year. It always seems like everything intensifies with more sharks including schooling Silky sharks mixing it up with schooling Hammerheads, lots of tuna and pelagic fish and even pilot whales. There is also the chance to see whale sharks and water temps are up to the mid – high 70’s. Check this video that was shot one day last year https://vimeo.com/99848281
We have chartered OG partner, the MV Nautilus Explorer, a custom designed and built specifically for expedition to remote destination. It is the only shop in the region that boast of SOLAS certification, stabilization for an easier ride in the open ocean. She is managed by an international crew of with decades of combined experience catering wide selection of micro-brew beer, fine wine, contemporary menu and yes a hot-tub as well.
Our diving platform is a ship with ample room to socialise or quiet place to read, chat, fill out your dive log or edit images. The vessel is equipped with a hot tub and the main salon also serves as the entertainment centre with very “comfy” lounge chairs, extensive library and a well-stocked bar. There are eight staterooms with en-suite in the lower deck and one triple occupancy stateroom. On the sun deck there are three superior suites with large exterior windows.
Our 10-night combo trip combines diving at Socorro with the best of Baja California - Sea of Cortez renowned as the “Aquarium of the World”. Though region is not known for tiny critters but there are lots of endemic fishes such as angelfish, butterflyfish, blennies, gobies, eels and frogfishes.
We will board the Nautilus Explorer in Cabo San Lucas at 8:00 pm, 31 May 2017, at 6pm. We will sail at 9:00 pm. We suggest that you arrive in Cabo one day earlier in event of delinquent luggage. We will be at sea the whole trip with a 24 hour crossing to reach Socorro; we will then dive for 6 to 7 days at three different islands before sailing back to the Sea of Cortez for diving 2 days before disembarking in Cabo San Lucas on 10 June at 8:00 am.
